Waiters, also known as servers, are responsible for greeting customers, taking orders, serving food and drinks, and ensuring a positive dining experience for guests in a restaurant or other food service establishment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Greet customers, seat them at tables, and present them with menus.
- Take orders from customers, making recommendations when asked.
- Relay customer orders to the kitchen staff, often using point of sale (POS) systems or order tickets.
- Serve food and drinks to customers, ensuring proper portion sizes, temperatures, and presentation.
- Check in with customers during their meal to ensure satisfaction and address any issues.
- Prepare and clean tables between seatings, including setting up tablecloths, silverware, and glasses.
- Provide information to customers about menu items, ingredients, and specials.
- Recommend wine or other beverages to accompany customers' meals.
- Process payments, handle cash, credit cards, and other forms of payment, and balance cash registers at the end of shifts.
- Maintain clean and organized workstations, including keeping track of condiments, utensils, and glassware.
- Restock service areas with necessary supplies, such as linens, silverware, and dishes.
- Collaborate with kitchen staff to resolve any issues with orders, food quality, or preparation times.
- Participate in inventory management, including counting and ordering supplies, and tracking inventory levels.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings to stay updated on new menu items, promotions, or service procedures.
- Uphold health and safety regulations, including proper food handling, storage, and sanitation practices.
