Transport goods from one location to another using a tractor trailer.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues
- Follow appropriate route directions to destinations
- Maintain logs of hours spent driving and adherence to scheduled pickups and deliveries
- Communicate with dispatchers and supervisors to confirm delivery times and locations
- Obtain receipts or signatures for deliveries and pickups
- Report any mechanical issues or incidents to the appropriate personnel
- Plan routes and determine delivery schedules
- Load and unload cargo
- Comply with all applicable traffic and vehicle regulations
- Maintain a clean and safe driving environment
- Obtain necessary permits for transporting hazardous materials
- Monitor vehicle performance and condition
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks
- Plan for fuel stops and rest breaks
- Collaborate with shipping and receiving departments
- Handle and secure cargo to prevent damage or loss
- Follow all company guidelines and policies
- Communicate effectively with customers and other drivers
- Maintain professional appearance and conduct
Requirements
Valid driver’s license (Commercial Driver's License – CDL may be required depending on location)
Terminal truck or yard jockey experience preferred (6 months – 2 years typical)
Familiarity with container yards, ports, warehouses, or distribution centers
Basic mechanical knowledge (for minor checks and reporting issues)
Physical ability to climb into trucks, lift gear, and work in all weather conditions
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred but not always required)
Good safety record and clean background check
