Cleaners perform a variety of cleaning tasks to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of establishments such as offices, homes, hospitals, and schools. They often use cleaning equipment and chemicals to clean floors, furniture, windows, and other surfaces.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Sweep, mop, or vacuum floors
- Dust furniture, fixtures, and other surfaces
- Clean windows, mirrors, and glass doors
- Empty wastebaskets and dispose of waste materials
- Clean and disinfect restrooms
- Strip and wax floors
- Clean kitchen appliances and equipment
- Clean and polish fixtures such as faucets, sinks, and toilets
- Vacuum upholstered furniture
- Clean carpets and rugs
- Dismantle and reassemble furniture for cleaning
- Maintain cleaning supplies and equipment
- Follow safety guidelines when handling cleaning chemicals
- Report any maintenance problems to supervisors
- Follow the specific cleaning requirements of each area
Requirements
Minimum Age
- Must be at least 21 years old
No formal education is required
- Basic literacy (reading and understanding instructions) is usually expected
- Some employers may prefer candidates with high school level education
3. Work Experience (Preferred but Not Mandatory)
- Prior experience as a nanny, housekeeper, or cook is often preferred
- New or inexperienced workers may still qualify if:
- They are trainable
- Show good manners, hygiene, and willingness to learn
4. Skills Required
- Basic cleaning skills (sweeping, mopping, washing, ironing)
- Cooking (basic household meals, or based on employer’s preference)
- Laundry and ironing
- Taking care of children, elderly, or pets (if needed)
- Ability to follow instructions
- Time management and organization
- Basic communication skills (especially if the employer speaks a different language)

- Clean and well-groomed
Valid ID (national ID, voter’s ID, etc.)
- Police clearance
- Medical certificate (to confirm fitness for domestic work)

- Employment contract (to formalize working conditions)
