Security guards and officers ensure the safety of properties, people, and assets by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate activities. They may work in a variety of settings, including public buildings, retail stores, and corporate offices.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and secure premises to prevent theft and maintain order
- Control access to buildings, checking IDs and searching bags
- patrol industrial and commercial properties on foot or in vehicles
- Write reports on incidents and observations during tours
- Monitor security systems, including cameras and alarms
- Respond to emergencies and calls for assistance
- Interview witnesses and investigate incidents
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude to deter suspicious activities
- Detain violators and turn them over to law enforcement
- Escort and protect people, including dignitaries and celebrities
- Provide first aid and emergency medical care
- Collaborate with law enforcement and emergency services
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Operate and maintain security equipment, such as metal detectors and x-ray machines
- Provide customer service and answer questions from the public
