Job Description

Scaffolding involves the erection, maintenance, and dismantling of temporary structures (scaffolds) to support workers and materials during construction, repair, or maintenance projects. Scaffolding workers ensure the safety and stability of these structures, adhering to strict regulations and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Erecting scaffolding structures according to blueprints and project specifications.
• Ensuring scaffolding is level, stable, and properly secured to prevent accidents.
• Inspecting scaffolding components for defects or wear and replacing damaged parts.
• Assembling and disassembling scaffolding frames, planks, and safety equipment.
• Using tools such as wrenches, hammers, and levels to assemble scaffolding.
• Ensuring compliance with OSHA and other safety regulations.
• Installing guardrails, toe boards, and safety nets to prevent falls.
• Calculating load capacities and ensuring scaffolding can safely support workers and materials.
• Collaborating with construction teams to position scaffolding in optimal locations.
• Conducting regular safety inspections of scaffolding during project duration.
• Repairing or adjusting scaffolding as needed to maintain stability.
• Training or supervising other workers on proper scaffolding techniques.
• Documenting scaffolding assembly, inspections, and maintenance activities.
• Removing and storing scaffolding components after project completion.
• Ensuring proper disposal or recycling of old or damaged scaffolding materials.

Technical Skills

🔩 Erection & Dismantling

• Assemble and disassemble scaffolding systems safely and efficiently.
• Understand how to install base plates, standards, ledgers, transoms, braces, and guardrails.
• Use appropriate tools like spanners, levels, and hammers.

🏗️ Load Handling

• Calculate and manage load capacities (dead loads, live loads, environmental loads).
• Ensure platforms can safely support workers, tools, and materials.

📏 Measurement & Layout

• Read and interpret scaffolding plans and site drawings.
• Measure accurately using levels, plumb bobs, tape measures, and laser tools.

🔧 Working with Different Systems

• Know how to build with various scaffold types:
  • Tube and coupler
  • Frame scaffolding
  • System/modular scaffolds (e.g., Kwikstage, Cuplock, Ringlock)
  • Suspended and mobile scaffolds

🪜 Access & Safety Structures

• Install ladders, stair towers, access decks, and fall protection systems.
• Erect handrails, toe boards, and safety netting.

⚠️ Hazard Identification

• Spot potential hazards: overhead lines, weak foundations, poor weather, etc.
• Perform pre-start checks and risk assessments.

📋 Regulatory Knowledge

• Understand local health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, WAHR, AS/NZS, CSA).
• Know scaffold tagging systems and inspection requirements.

🧯 Emergency Response

• Respond to accidents or structural failures.
• Understand procedures for fire safety, fall rescue, and first aid.

• Carry heavy equipment, climb scaffolds, and work at heights.
• Maintain balance, stamina, and coordination.

• Ensure scaffolds are level, square, and secure.
• Check for missing components or damaged materials.

🗣️ 4. Interpersonal & Communication Skills

👥 Teamwork

• Work closely with other scaffolders, site supervisors, and tradespeople.
• Coordinate during erection/dismantling to avoid accidents.

🗣️ Communication

• Report safety issues, progress updates, and changes to supervisors.
• Follow verbal and written instructions clearly.

🎓 5. Training & Certification Skills
