Light drivers operate trucks and other vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 26,000 pounds or less to transport goods, materials, or passengers. They are responsible for the safe operation of their vehicles and for ensuring that cargo is properly secured.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Drive trucks or other vehicles to transport goods or materials to their destinations.
- Plan and follow the most efficient routes to save time and fuel.
- Inspect vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues before and after each trip.
- Load and unload cargo, using equipment such as dollies, hand trucks, or forklifts as necessary.
- Secure cargo for transport, using straps, ropes, or other types of restraints.
- Maintain logs of their activities, including hours worked and miles driven, in accordance with regulations.
- Communicate with dispatchers, supervisors, or customers to provide or receive information about cargo, delivery times, or route changes.
- Follow all traffic and transportation laws and regulations, including speed limits and rules regarding the use of horns, lights, and other warning devices.
- Report any accidents, equipment malfunctions, or other unusual incidents to their supervisors or dispatchers.
- Obtain necessary permits or documents for transporting hazardous materials or crossing international borders.
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance, such as checking oil levels, cleaning windows, or replacing light bulbs.
- Operate tow trucks or other vehicles to recover disabled or damaged vehicles or to assist other drivers in emergency situations.
- Collaborate with other drivers or workers to move large or heavy items, such as furniture or appliances.
- Keep their vehicles clean and organized, both inside and out, to ensure a professional appearance and to facilitate inspections.
- Participate in safety meetings or training sessions as required by their employers or regulatory agencies.
