Job Description
Freight, stock, and material movers, hand laborers, and helpers perform a variety of tasks involving the movement of materials, freight, and supplies to ensure the timely transfer of products and goods.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Loading and unloading materials, such as stock, equipment, and freight, from vehicles, ships, or aircraft
- Moving materials, such as boxes, crates, or other freight, by hand or with the aid of machinery
- Stacking and storing materials in a safe and organized manner
- Operating hand trucks, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment to move heavy loads
- Inspecting materials for damage during loading and unloading
- Preparing materials for shipment by wrapping, labeling, or marking them
- Packing and unpacking boxes and containers
- Maintaining clean and orderly work areas
- Operating forklifts, cranes, or other heavy machinery to move materials
- Assisting with assembly tasks by fetching components or materials
- Moving materials within a facility or between buildings
- Counting and recording materials to ensure accurate inventory
- Performing routine maintenance on material handling equipment
- Following safety procedures to prevent accidents and injuries
- Communicating with supervisors, coworkers, or customers regarding material movement and handling
Requirements
Minimum Age
- Must be at least 21yrs
2. Education
- No formal education is required
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills are usually necessary
- high school diploma or equivalent
3. Forklift Operator Certification / License
- Must complete an approved forklift training program
(often includes classroom instruction + practical training)
